The Weather Network and Uvagut TV/NITV team up to deliver hourly forecasts for Nunatsiaq, Nunavut, Nunavik and Nunatsiavut

Igloolik. December 1, 2023: There are eight distinct climate regions in Canada. The Nunavut region is certainly one of them, with very cold, harsh winters, short, cool summers and low precipitation.

This is why NITV and Uvagut TV, in collaboration with The Weather Network, are pleased to announce four Inuktut-dialect weather reports every hour, including sharing ice conditions in the winter and mosquitoes in the summer seasons. The creation of four 3-minute local weather forecasts, 16 times a day, for the Inuit regions of Nunatsiaq, Nunavut, Nunavik and Nunatsiavut, brings peace of mind to communities, now that they can access accurate weather in their own dialects.

“As a daughter and sister of men who hunt for their families all year long, having weather segments on Uvagut TV gives me peace of mind,” said Jennifer Qupanuaq May, Director of Programming, Uvagut TV.

The vital importance of providing the weather forecasts in multiple dialects was essential. Working with 5 translators, Lucy Tulgarjuk provided The Weather Network with the right terminology for the dialects of Nunatsiaq, Nunavik, Nunatsiavut and Nunavut’s Kivalliq and Qikiqtaaluk regions. “This process was challenging because not all terms or expressions have equivalent Inuktitut translations,” says Dwight Arthur, Production Manager, The Weather Network.

“I have been in Igloolik and have seen the Inuktitut (weather) broadcasts. I am so proud as an Inuk to see the Inuktitut being included. I commend the effort to help keep Inuktitut alive,” adds Lori Idlout, MP Nunavut.

“Pelmorex is extremely excited and proud to have developed and launched this unique weather forecast product with our partners at Uvagut TV. Inuit Nunangat is affected by, and connected to, the weather in ways unlike anywhere else in the country, and we are pleased to be providing its residents with timely, accurate forecasts, in their own language. As Canada’s trusted source for weather forecasts, news and information, we believe it is our mission to deliver forecasts to all Canadians, where and how they want to receive them,” noted Kurt Eby, Director, Regulatory, Government & Affiliate Relations, Pelmorex Weather Networks Inc.
